WAREHOUSED

About
One instructive way to read the history of the world is to trace the abusive power relationships between the people who yield it over those who have not. Power tends to consolidate among a small circle of elites, and all great civilizations at the peak of their power have the "few" rule the "many." The consequences for the many who lack the organized institutions to keep powerful elites accountable can be disastrous to their possessions and human rights. Sometimes, the balance of power can be so disproportionately in favor of the powerful few that it becomes untenable for some people to remain in their homeland. The United Nations defines a refugee as a person "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country." The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants estimates that out of the 62 million refugees in the world, 34 million have been displaced by war.

Eight out of the 34 million refugees can be defined as warehoused refugees. Warehoused refugees can be defined as 10,000 or more people restricted to camps or segregated settlements or otherwise deprived of basic rights five years or more. They are deprived of their rights to work, practice professions, run businesses, own property, move about freely, or choose their home. Deprived of basic human rights, generations of refugees exist in forced idleness. Million of refugees have been waiting for repatriation for decades, but they often require fundamental regime changes to resettle them in third countries.

Warehoused will walk through the history of warehoused refugees, some of whom have been denied their basic human rights for decades. The movie will explore choices in finding and executing durable solutions such as improving basic living conditions in the often-crowded camps. The key to understanding the plight of the warehoused refugees is to walk in their shoes, and the movie will center on several warehoused refugees and their lives spent living in the camp. Warehoused will not only explore in depth the human rights crisis warehoused refugees live with every day, but also try to create an avenue in which people can be directed to help improve their lives in a small but tangible way.
Purpose

To be human is to suffer, and in suffering, we are undeniably linked. Only by turning catastrophe into story, can the possibility of reconciliation come into focus. It's my deeply held hope that a sad story about neglect, abandonment, and rejection once told, can become about love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Truth is a condition created by allowing suffering to speak. As a storyteller, I identify my calling to speak truth to power, lift all voices despite socio-economic condition, and call forth changes that favor the neglected and rejected. It's my hope that by telling this story, it can lead to a beginning.
